Cathodic protection (CP) is a technique to reduce the corrosion rate of a metal surface by making it the cathode of an electrochemical cell.
In more general terms, CP is a method of controlling corrosion on buried and/ or submerged structures by applying direct current to the structure. Many factors need to be considered when designing a cathodic protection system; soil conditions, pipeline properties such as size, coating, length, current requirements and right-of-way are a few of those conditions.
